Transport processes and biogeochemical cycles of particulate materials were summarized from results of oceanographic observations carried out in the Japan Sea from 1998-2002. Inventories of Pu-239+240 in the northeastern Japan Sea were larger than those in the western Japan Sea. The distribution of anthropogenic radionuclides indicated basin-scale biogeochemical processes in the Japan Sea rather than local processes such as radioactive waste disposal. Elemental composition of settling particles enabled us to understand that particulate materials in the northeastern Japan Sea originated from the Asian continent through the Tsushima Strait. These findings will play an important role in simulating the transport processes of materials in the Japan Sea.
